Chébé powder comes from the Basara women of Chad, famous for hair that reaches below the waist. The powder is a mix of roasted seeds and plants, traditionally blended with oil or butter and applied to the lengths of the hair, then braided in and left for days.
What it does
Chébé does not make hair grow faster. Growth happens at the follicle, in the scalp, and chébé is not applied to the scalp. What it does is help you keep the hair you grow. Coily and curly hair breaks easily, so most people never see their true length. Chébé coats the hair fibre, keeps moisture in and reduces friction and breakage. Less breakage over months equals visible length retention. That is the whole secret.
Who it is for
- Hair that breaks before it reaches shoulder length.
- Dry, brittle ends that split and snap.
- Type 4 and tight curly hair that struggles to retain moisture.
It is less useful for fine, low-porosity hair that gets weighed down, and it does nothing for hair loss coming from the scalp: thinning, shedding, traction alopecia or hormonal loss need a different approach.
How to use it without regrets
- Apply to clean, damp hair, on the lengths and ends only. Keep it off the scalp.
- Mix the powder with a light oil or a leave-in until it forms a smooth paste.
- Braid or twist the sections and leave the mixture in for three to five days.
- Rinse thoroughly before reapplying. Build-up on the scalp is where itching and flaking start.
Used this way, once or twice a week, most people see less breakage within four to eight weeks and real length after a few months.
What we tell our clients
Chébé is a length-retention tool, not a cure for hair loss. If your problem is at the root, we will say so, and recommend what you actually need, even if we do not sell it. If your problem is breakage, chébé is one of the best traditional answers there is.
